Watch your water level
Water at the wrong level will burn out your pool pump in under an hour. Here's how to check it and keep your skimmer working right.
What you'll learn
- The skimmer-mouth rule, water sits in the middle of the opening
- San Diego evaporation rates in summer (~1/4" per day)
- Why low water destroys pump shaft seals fast
- The 24-hour bucket test for suspected leaks
Step by step
- Walk up to the skimmer and look at the opening.
- Below the bottom of the mouth? Add water from the hose.
- Aim for the middle of the skimmer opening.
- Check weekly, San Diego summer loses about 1/4" daily to evaporation.
Safety note
Losing more than 1/2 inch per day that can't be explained by evaporation is a leak. A bucket test confirms, call us if more than 3/4" per day is disappearing.
